The Church is a Mess!

“The church is a mess!” I said to Walker this morning, as I went there to set up for Bible Study tonight. He just kept right on watching the cartoon video I had pulled up for him to keep him occupied while I did a few things. I thought about that statement, and realized, the church is a mess, but it’s a beautiful mess.  A mess of people that are messy.

The mess I’m talking about has nothing to do with the cosmetics of the church. Though, that was probably some of the most fun we’ve ever had.

We’re all messy people. We might look pretty and pristine on the outside, but we all have struggles, we all have real struggles. We come from different places, and different backgrounds. We come from good families, broken families, and no families. We come from prison, we are in prison, and we’ve broken out of prison. We come from happy places, good places, bad places, and far away places. We’ve been kicked out, beaten down, and dusted off. But we are a FAMILY. Membership in a local church means joining your imperfect self with other imperfect selves to form a community that, through the love of Jesus, sets sail on a journey toward this thing we call LIFE... together.

The church was purposely designed to be a place for all people to come as they are to worship the living God. We want our church to be welcoming to everyone no matter what your background was/is, or what you are currently struggling with.

This is not the case of every church I have been part of. But thankfully, there are churches that are seeking to be a refuge for all. Churches that welcome people just like you and me. No church is perfect, and thank God they’re not. I would never fit in.

He sees what we are going to become.

Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.”
– 1 John 3:2

Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end. – Ecclesiastes 3:11

God truly makes beautiful things out of dust, and out of us.
